A03 in Progress

Hello readers…for the time being, we are all busy completing the lesson plans, task sheets and supporting materials for A03. I should admit that it is not easy to make sure that the activity created or designed will ensure an effective student-centered, personalized learning and higher order- thinking lesson. After all, below I have included 7 possible items to ensure all those elements are included in the lessons prepared.

1~ Encourage cooperative learning

 

What's gonna work? It's TEAM work!

This item is very important to let the pupils learn through discussion and sharing ideas with their peers or group members. This approach helps students to see problems, make connections, motivate themselves and improve their learning.

2~ Provide opportunity to discover their own learning
This important aspect will provide children with activities that promote thinking as example, create their own story, imagine about dream transport and so on. Therefore, it gives them the opportunities and freedom to be creative and at the same time helps in their development of reasoning skills about the story or transportation created.

3~ Vary activities to accommodate pupils’ multiple learning styles.


This item is substantial as to make sure the activities designed or conducted will meet the pupils’ multiple learning styles. For instance, for those who learn best through kinaesthetic, I have designed the activity that involves movements and actions like role play, puppet theatre and etc.

4~ Utilize various resources for the pupils to manipulate.

Exposing the pupils to various resources will help in personalized learning as the pupils are given opportunity to try out various tools in expending their ideas and learning development.

5~ Promote student engagement.

This criterion should not be left out as it is important to ensure that pupils understand and get the idea of what the lesson is all about. Getting pupils to get engage in the activities conducted provide space for the pupils to express the knowledge received throughout the lesson.

6~ Connect to pupils’ previous knowledge.

Another important element that should be taken into consideration to ensure the effectiveness of the lesson taught is by connecting the pupils’ previous knowledge to present knowledge. By doing so, it will help o enhance the pupils understanding towards the topics or the lesson taught.

7~ Assessment as part of learning


Assessment is important to determine whether or not the goals or aims set are being met. Besides, it is crucial to measure the recent knowledge or skills that a student has acquired.

Hello readers!  This time I would like to share my original and modified e-book. Here are some of the slides taken from my previous e-book 🙂

The layout is so DULL and BORING isn't IT?

Not attractive enough

I notice that my previous e-book was not appealing enough to the year 1 pupils. In fact the background and the graphic were BORING and DULL. I admit that I have chosen the wrong font (Arial) which was not attractive to the young children. Moreover, my inability to take into account the contrast of the font colour and the background resulted in difficulties to read the text written. Some of my pupils complained that the words written cannot be seen clearly especially those sitting at the back. Taken into account the comments and aspects stated I determined to makeover and revise the design and structure of my e-book.

So, here are some of the slides taken from my modified e-book.

Come on, sing it!

Guessing time!

In this modified e-book I have included a character (Orange) to introduce his friends to the children. Compared to my previous e-book, the introduction of the fruits was straight forward. But in this revised version, the fruits are introduced through song. The lyric of the song is repetitive important for the pupils to remember and recall the name of the fruits easily. To reinforce and further understanding, I have inserted the element of guessing (to spell the name of the fruits) to make it more appealing and interactive.

Let’s Go WILD!

Hi readers! We meet again. In this entry I am going to illustrate personalized learning in the lesson using the tool “Build Your Wild Self”. So, let’s check it out!

Year 4

Proficiency: Above average

Focused skill: Speaking

Objective(s): By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:-

i)                    use the build your wildself tool to create their “wild self”

ii)                   describe unique features of their “wild self”

iii)                 use at least five nouns learnt to build their “wild self”.

Language focus: Nouns: (antlers, antennae, crest, mane, hood, snout, hoofs)

Procedures for Practice Stage

1. Teacher teaches how to use the tool to the pupils.

2. Teacher allocates sometimes for the pupils to use the features in the tool.

3. Later, individually each pupil is to use the tool to build his/her “wild self”

4. Pupils are to ensure at least five nouns learnt are used while creating their “wild self”.

5. Teacher then randomly picks a few pupils to present their “wild self” to the class.

6. Using power point presentation pupils are to present their “wild self”

7. Pupils are encouraged to describe the unique features about their “wild self”

8. Then, teacher asks other pupils to vote by raising hand for the best “wild self” presented by their friends.

Wild Word Garden

Hello readers..we meet again.:-) For this entry I will illustrate how to adapt an online game into a lesson to be carried out in classroom. So, I have chosen Wild Word Garden game to be adapted in my lesson.

This game will be played by the pupils during the post reading activity. Below are the details and procedures of this lesson.

 

Class : Year 5
Proficiency Level : High proficiency
Enrolment : 25 Pupils
Focused Skill : Reading
Integrated Skills : Speaking, Listening
Learning Objective(s) : By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

(I)  acquire wide range of vocabulary

Language Focus : Vocabulary

 

Procedures

1.Pupils play this game in group

2.In a form of competition pupils play this game.

3.Pupils are to form as many vocabulary they can to win the game.

4.The group that achieves the highest level within the time given will be winner of the game.

 

Justification for using Wild Word Garden

-Encourage co-operative learning

-Encourage the pupils to speak and communicate

-Lessen their anxiety level thru online game.

-Assist the pupils to acquire wide range of vocabulary

Fun with “KERPOOF”

Hello, we meet again. This time, I’ll discuss about one tool which is spectacular and great to be utilized in the classroom. Now, presenting the one and only “KERPOOF”!

What is Kerpoof?

One may ask, What Kerpoof is? Here’s the straightforward answer: Kerpoof” is an online art studio where your children can use their creativity to create art or videos using animation!

What are the functions of the tool?

Kerpoof provides immense interactive and enjoyable functions which will be greatly be appreciated by the users. They are Make a Movie, Make a Card, Make a Drawing, Make a Story and Make a Picture. Let’s take a look at each feature in detail

I – Make a movie


This application is awesome! It allows the pupils to select a storyline and a few scenes that they like and once satisfied then can create their very own movie! The drag-and-drop features are so easy to use hence I believe even the lower primary can produce a short a movie without much difficulty!

II – Make a card


Just pick any occasion you like and start designing a unique and creative card either for your friends, or your teachers! Impress your schoolmates by adding your personal touch in the card through drawings or your simple signature. There are lots of graphics that one can choose or select from. Just click the “search” button, and off you go!

III- Make a Drawing


Pupils love to draw. A lot! Thanks to this application for catering to their needs! Their learning experience will never be the same with this cool application anymore! The shape sensor is great to ease the pupils to draw shapes. The colour mixer on the other hand offers pupils to mix any colour (whatever colour they want) needed for their drawing. Isn’t that cool?

IV- Make a story

Let your imagination runs freely! This application permits pupils to design each page with texts, pictures, drawing or whatever they want. Once done, it is up to the pupils whether to share the story with their friends, or keep it to themselves. I perceive this application as beneficial in developing their creativity.

V- Make a picture

First, pick a background. Later, decorate the background with texts, pictures, word bubbles, shapes or anything that you can think of. Pupils would absolutely love this application as they can immerse in creativity and have fun at the same time! A great application I must say!

What are the advantages of Kerpoof?

For teachers

Kerpoof provides free and numerous lesson plans for the teachers to use and to refer to. From art to Science or even English all are provided for teachers to choose from.

For students

This tool provides opportunities to share artwork and rate others. Apart from that, it encourages collaboration and co-operation among the students.

What are the limitations of Kerpoof

Need internet access

This is an online tool. Without internet access this tool cannot be used.

Need fast internet access.

The graphics in Kerpoof, causes the delay in loading the tool. It could sometimes be irritating. So, fast internet access is required in order for this tool to be operated at its best.

When can Kerpoof be used?

I- Make a card

– can be used when teaching festivals in  Malaysia. Can ask pupils to produce cards that portray celebrations in the country. For example, Christmas, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali, and Chinese New Year.

II- Make a picture

– can be used when teach pupils about animals. Pupils can search the particular graphic (related to animals) and later describe the occupation to the rest. They can also decorate the picture as they like

III- Make a drawing

– can be used when teaching transports. For example, asking pupils to create and draw their own dream transport and later colour them.

IV – Make a story

Can be used when the teacher would like the pupils to come out with an alternative ending of the story. Enhance critical and creative thinking skills.

How about the user-friendliness of this tool from your point of view?

I shall say this tool is easy to use. Even me, the novice could familiarize myself just in a few minutes exploring and experimenting with this tool. For beginners, tutorials, examples or how-to manuals are provided in order to help them to use this tool to the fullest.

Which standards do you think this tool is suitable for?

I shall say, this tool is universal for any of the standard. It actually depends on the teacher on how he would like to go about using or manipulate the tool for the pupils. If used properly, I am sure, wonders can be created in the learning classroom.

A package of T.P.A.C.K

Hi readers…we meet again..it has been 3 weeks since we started the ICT classes. For this week let me discuss about what TPACK is. TPACK is a framework comprises of Technological (T), Pedagogical (P) and Content knowledge (C). So, how this framework related to the teaching and learning in the classroom?

I believe that all the lessons implemented in the classroom have covered these 3 aspects in the component of TPACK. Every lesson planned has its own way in delivering the teaching and learning lesson. Thus, I would like to share one of my lesson plan implemented during my 3 months of teaching practicum. This lesson plan is designed for Year 1 pupils with average proficiency. Basically, this lesson is focusing on reading as a main skill and revolved around the topic “Sea Animals”. Therefore, below I will discuss further how I integrate the Technological Knowledge (TK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK) and Content Knowledge (CK) in my whole lesson.

Technological Knowledge

I have integrated Power Point presentation for my whole lesson. Apart from that, I included video watching for the pupils at the end of the lesson as to reduce their anxiety levels.

Pedagogical knowledge

Set induction – Oral responsesà at this stage pupil are encouraged to be active participants and help to attract the pupils’ attention towards the lesson.

Practice stage – Scaffoldingà teacher provide help or assist pupils to complete the task given in the. Apart from the teacher, peer also plays an important role where they are also required to help their friend(s) to complete their task.

Production stage – Co-operative learningà pupils are to work in groups and decorate their sea animals’ puppet and present it in front of the class.

Now, another question pops-out. How technological knowledge assisted pedagogical knowledge so as to let the pupils understand or get the content knowledge?

During set induction, I played some guessing game with the pupils using Power Point presentation. Here, they are required to guess the topic on that day by guessing the correct alphabets. One by one alphabet will appear as they continue guessing it correctly.

For pre-teach activity, I used a story “Dora’s Wonderful Journey” as to enhance the pupils’ learning experience. The story is created using Power Point presentation with some animations added to make it more lively and interesting. The pupils were actively engage in the session in guessing the plot of the story. There were also parts where the pupils are exposed to the correct spelling and pronunciation of the language focus taught (name of the sea animals)

In the practice stage, pupils are given task sheets to sequence the plot of the story based on the reading text read. This

activity helps to enhance pupils’ skill in reading and at the same time encourage them to read.

For production stage, pupils are encouraged to work in groups in order to promote co-operative learning. During this activity, pupils decorated the puppets’ using their own creativity and present to the class.

As to sum up the lesson I include a video entitled “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”. The video is to help the pupils to get the tune of the song. The adapted version of the song is called “The Sea Animals” which I created my own.

Hello readers! We meet again. For this post I’m going to share my top 10 wish lists to change the ICT situation in the school.. Here are the lists.

10- Get support from the school administration.

The administration should be supportive enough and should work hand in hand with the teacher to ensure the integration of ICT in the school works  successfully.

9- Upgrade ICT facilities in all schools

The school should ensure that all the computers should be equipped with latest software and programmes to make the process of teaching run smoothly.

8- Allocate enough ICT facilities regardless the school area.

Provide enough computers for all students. Not to forget ensure that LCD and screen projectors are available in each class.

7- Intensive training to improve teacher’s skills to maximize the use of ICT

Important to help reducing fear of using ICT among the teachers.

6- E-learning to support learner’s development.

E-learning helps to meet the needs of students’ varied learning styles. E-learning is not only available for normal students but for students with disabilities, e-learning can be particularly beneficial and simple to ensure that e-resources can be made accessible to students with visual impairments and motor injuries.

5- Easy internet access  in school

This aspect should not be overlooked if you want to ensure the e-learning to be working. It is crucial for the students to get the internet connection so as to get access to their subject or lesson easily.

4- E-textbook to replace the current textbooks

Reduce the students’ burdens carrying heavy textbooks everyday to the school

3- Ensure contents in the syllabus are universal and open for adaptability – still relevant to be used for quite a period of time.

2- Create school website for the parents and the students to be updated with the activities or programme held in the school.

1- Teacher’s mindset towards ICT.

If all the lists above are available in school it is still not enough if the teachers refuse to equip themselves with the technology provided to a maximum. For me it is such a waste if the teachers still prefer to use the traditional method during teaching and learning process.
